    Calista at least had the grace to blush. ”Yeahhhhh…” she admitted, looking down. ”This was our only shot at her, and it was because of the run that I found out about you being here. Fox knew I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on the run, so we figured might as well tart me up and get everyone watching. They were going to anyway. Might as well use these curves to do the job, too!”

    Calista caught the pause, finished her pleasantries, turned back to Robyn. “What is it, love?” She asked in a low voice. Had she “seen” something? Had she herself said something to upset Robyn? Was she being too social, stealing the limelight or saying the wrong things? This was Robyn’s world, not hers, and Calista wasn’t sure what toes she might have trod on or lines she might have crossed. Hesitantly, she asked, “Baby, did I do something wrong?”

    “Well I haven’t.” Alessandra interjected. “Why do you call Vindariel and his ilk ‘nine-killers’ anyway?” Her pretty eyes grew distant as she remembered that awful time. Her memory had faded with the centuries, and the metahuman mind was not well-prepared to vividly remember trauma, so the Ritual of Thorns had further blunted the horrors of those days, but she still remembered enough to chill her blood even now. She remembered the beginning, and the end, the awful death-spells and battle-curses slung by master hexcrafters when simple swords would no longer avail them against the massive, roiling, wrong forms, burning themselves out one by one as they threw every last drop of power into their desperate stand, fighting to buy time for Alachia’s awful, brilliant spellcraft and again at the end of the war, vengeance and pain driving them to kill themselves with the effort of fighting back the weakened, but still-puissant nightmares.

    Calista laughed again, a light, breathy, silvery little sound. “Gods, um, get through tonight intact, I think?” She said questioningly. “I’ve got this job to think about, but once that’s done, I should be free. Hopefully it won’t take too long. Grab the target, talk to her a bit to make sure we’re on the straight and narrow, and get the hell out of dodge. Once we deliver the principal, we should be good to go, and the delivery is, at least, in this town.” Calista looked around the room for signs of her fellows or their target, masking the search with a few handshakes, curtsies, and murmured pleasantries. She drew in the power for a spell, even began shaping it, then stopped again, letting her aura surge and fade back down. That should get heads turning.

    @beta I appreciate that, and I’d be honored to play with you again sometime. I’m just not a good fit for this game, and it’s not a good fit for me. If I’d been there from the beginning, maybe, or played a more direct character. I’ll still be here to see what happens, and I have loved the hell out of Preston. I *am* sorry to have discomforted you in this awful time, even unintentionally. Please let me know if I can help.

    I had this whole long post written out, but I would prefer not to argue. It would be a long and needless discussion, and nobody wants that, I think. Suffice to say that I disagree with that assessment, I feel the character has become untenable for me, and any solutions may delay the game for no discernible benefit and leave me right back here.

    You, Ravel, as you changed my nature forever.

    Good gods, that’s buried way back in the dim and misty of my (admittedly short) memory. I haven’t played that game since high school.

    “Whoa whoa whoa!” Calista said, laughing. “Pump the brakes, babe. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves here, okay?” Calista kissed Robyn on the cheek, suddenly all smiles again. “No need to uproot the girls’ lives. I meant, have they been here on vacation? You know, come see the Seattle Ballet, take in a show, really get the whole ‘Emerald City’ experience. Let’s meet them together before we start talking about life-altering experiences for them, maybe?” She grinned and shook her head, warmed by Robyn’s exuberance. She gestured around her. “This is my life ow. I don’t want to give it up, and you have your own. Let’s not play the game of who can sacrifice what they’ve worked for first, hmmm? Stay in town a little while longer, see if the girls want to meet me, reconnect. No need to rush.” Calista caressed Robyn’s cheek, her thumb trailing over the other woman’s lips. “I’m here to stay, love. It’s alright. As for where to stay, my place has space, but there’s a few of us there, and it’s really Foxglove’s as much as it is mine. It’s a garage, not exactly the most private or salubrious place, but she’ll give it up when hell freezes over, and I’m pretty partial to the place myself. How about we find you a nice place nearby-ish, and I can split my time? I don’t want Fox to think I’m abandoning her. She’s my best friend, and we’ve been through a lot together.”

    @Jack_Spade

    She’s all yours. Control has been transferred on OP as well. For reference, at least up to the current point, she is channeling a force 14 Fire spirit which owes her 6 services, and she’s got three points of stun that are completely not affecting her, due to the aforementioned massive spirit. She has 2/4 edge.

    @All

    This, unfortunately, is where I leave you. While I am massively curious as to the direction of the story, it is best that I go. You guys have the right to a fun game, and my presence is dragging it down. Between the IC spilling into OOC, the conflict between Noir’s build and this campaign’s style, the difficulty that some players have in reading her posts (You’re not the only one, Beta), and how playing Noir is interacting with my crippling social anxiety, it is past time for me to remand my character to Jack_Spade’s control and bow out. Thank you to those who have worked so hard with, for, or on me. It’s been a blast. Jack_Spade, I’m sorry about the wasted effort. Feel free to use me as a sounding board or a resource for the building of horrid things.

    See you all around!

    Nothing, Ravel. Nothing can change the nature of a man.

    Noir’s immediate reaction was to laugh, make an obscene gesture, and cleanse the area with fire. Indeed, she had thrown back her head, the first mocking peal of laughter bubbling up when the last sentence penetrated the atavistic response to a Faustian bargain.

    It would be nice.

    To be able to take the fight to the vampires, to be able to destroy them at their own game, to no longer fear death or pain. And these were the watchers on the plateau, the things meant to restrain The Sleeper. She could think of no better power to marshal, should the worst occur. It would warp her, yes, maybe even kill her.

    So?

    Noir knew she was at best a broken creature. She had her ideals and her spine, and that was it. No friends, no prospects. The things that had mattered to her most had been lost for years. She didn’t play well with others, she was losing her fight to her own demons, and it was getting harder and harder to see where the line was, where she was in the right versus the very, very wrong.

    What did she have to lose?

    Noir let out a long sigh. Then she slid off the stone upon which she had perched, taking a more comfortable position on the floor. The team was asleep, they wouldn’t expect her for hours yet. The invocation and binding could take longer, depending on what the spirits taught her, but she honestly doubted the others would notice if she disappeared home for a day or stayed behind here for a few hours.

    “Alright.” Noir said softly. She took a deep breath and let it out slowly. “Teach me.”

    Small town could be funny as hell. With this party, it’s like the start of a bad joke.

    Sorry for the reticence. Christmas took a bit more time than expected, work’s been kicking my ass the last few days, and I’m in a weird place with two of my characters on here. Should lighten up tonight.

    I’m aware of how to kill them. I didn’t say I was going to kill it. I said I was going to immolate the skulls.

    If you say so. And no, you can’t keep him. As soon as Noir decides she’s gotten everything from them, she’ll probably immolate both heads.

    Well, if you already know about the secret room, anthro drones, milspec hardware, and the vampires’ specialties, that at least saves Noir the trouble of having to figure out which of the party to tell.

    Calista didn’t answer immediately. She wanted what Robyn was offering, longed for it in a way she couldn’t fully describe, or even understand. It was the siren call of home, of stability and love and acceptance and a balm for all the pains and fears of her life.

    But family was here. Foxglove was here. The girls from KillAssist were here. She had friends, a home, a business even. Could she leave it behind?

    Calista trembled as she warred with herself, unsure of what to say. She couldn’t split from either one, she feared. In seeking out her life, she’d found another one. She’d built a life without ever realizing she was doing it, and now it seemed that she might have to choose between the two. Gods, what the hell was she going to do?

    Calista had to say something. “No, I suppose you can’t. And you’re right. I can love you, and I do, and I want you in my life too.” The words were halting and quiet, but firm, and she clutched at Robyn as she spoke, afraid of what was going to come out of her mouth. “I want you in my life, too, honey. The only difficulty is that our lives are thousands of kilometers apart now, and if I set foot in the British Isles, Melissa will know. She’s got long arms, and other nameless appendages. A visit may have to wait.” There, she’d bought herself some time, without saying anything that would cause her to stick a foot in her mouth. “I’d love to see your home, and your family. I just don’t know when I can come to you.” She smiled impishly. “Have the stuffy pre-med student and her friends ever been here? You know how kids are, raised on trids and stories. Have they ever been to the real Emerald City?”

    Noir recoiled from the head as she saw it for what it really was, and her palms itched with the urge to pick the thing up and immolate it. She could work with shedim, had before in fact, but she didn’t like it. They were alien even by the standards of astral denizens, which was so far out from metahumanity as to be laughable to begin with. Shaking her head, Noir said, “I’m sure there’s plenty more you can tell me.” She nodded at the stone circle across the crypt from her. “Like what’s on the other side of that. I know a little, not much but enough to be scared.” She tilted her head in a birdlike motion. “You’re one of the watchers, aren’t you.” It wasn’t a question. “You’re bound here. Its why you want a body, even a mangled one, and why you’re being so helpful to a mage who’s stuck you in a form with no agency and no mobility.” She nodded to herself. She had no proof, but it felt right, and she’d long ago learned to trust her intuition. “You want to get away. You’re not a master, you can’t make more of yourself, but anything is worth avoiding going back.”

    Noir held her arms out. “I can’t release you, not right now.” She looked around herself pointedly. “I don’t have a body, and I’m not going to go off some poor slot just so you can waltz on out of here, nor am I just going to carry you out in your present form. The people I’m with would react very badly if I carried a shedim-in-a-skull out of the creepy crypt and then tried to explain that it was all fine and good.” She smiled thinly, imagining that conversation. “If your information checks out, then I can get you a body, probably one helpfully provided by the soon-to-be-dead fellows at the garage. Speaking of which, you said there was a secret room. Where?”

    While it answered, Noir reached into her bag and pulled out the other head, set it on the altar beside the first one, wiped her still-bloody hand on the forehead again, repeated the incantation.

    Oh, that’s not so bad. As long as it doesn’t have legs or the ability to make more of itself, its far enough removed as to be fairly low-risk, insofar as a Shedim can ever be. At least its being helpful.
