Sounds reasonable – especially with our up front money

    Agreed! (re:Lysander)

I finally updated Jawsey’s character sheet. Besides the previously mentioned taking of in-debt from 4 to 2, he buys counterspelling from 0 to 2, and adds one point to a bunch of skills and knowledges (reaching heights of 2 or 3 points in each of them): spellcasting, summoning, computer, ritual magic, perception, impersonation.

And finally, how did I not know about the Dogmen before? I need to come up with an explanation for why Jawsey doesn’t have a relationship with any of them.

Lysander’s info dump is up. RPG Playroom tried to eat it but luckily I had it saved before I tried posting.

@beta I’m going to be honest that I’ve never even cracked Court of Shadows, even though it’s been sitting on my hard drive for years. Give me the weekend to review fae spirits. Green Toes would absolutely have something interesting to say.

    @beta

If memory serves, the Dogmen run down south, either in Auburn or Puyallup, so they haven’t really crossed our Redmond radar.

ICly, First Nations have moved around the city over the years, somewhat illogically at times, but I think part of what makes the relationship work isn’t just the shared heritage (Native) or shared enemies (Japanese) but also the fact that their territories and lines of business didn’t overlap, which made merging that much easier. That’s true for the Komun’go Ring as well. But that’s my take on things, not a official canon explanation.

For what it is worth I have no particular expectation of Green Toes. I was in a crunch to make up contacts, a fae spirit seemed more topical than a random free spirit, and I made up a name. I don’t remember if I’d purchased Court of Shadows at that point or not. So I’m pretty open on interpretation of Green Toes’ nature. About all I do know is that Jawsey met him astrally while watching a concert.

    @beta

Upon review, here are some possibilities for Green Toes. I was thinking he might be a variation of a benign observer spirit (Street Grimoire, p. 190):

Observer spirits are a new curiosity of mine. They do little more than watch the physical plane and that’s it. They don’t report to any other spirits, interact with the physical plane, or get involved with metahuman affairs—at least not in any observable way. An observer spirit simply plants its astral recliner, sits back, and watches without even the courtesy of inviting you to share an after dinner sherry.

If you want to try getting an observer spirit to acknowledge you in any way, you clearly appreciate impossible challenges. Might as well pull up your own recliner, because you won’t be going anywhere for awhile.

Now Green Toes wouldn’t be so reticent as that, but it might explain his low Connection rating (mostly watching from the sidelines) and low Loyalty (not one to form strong bonds). He’s unaffiliated, but maybe sees Jawsey as a kindred spirit as something of an astral traveler. Plus Jawsey’s a majestic specimen on the astral – for a metahuman at least (all astral attributes 5 or higher, including Charisma/Strength 8) – and his keen eye (Assensing 6) is equally impressive. So Green Toes is drawn to that.

Green Toes isn’t particularly interested in material goods. “Services” are more interesting, namely situations with curious emotions that would be intriguing to observe. But the Holy Grail, as usual, is karma. If you want the real dirt, karma is how you’ll pay.

Let me know how that sounds, or if you’d like to suggest any variations or alterations.

Haven’t heard from Beta so I’ll push forward with the above understanding for now. I’ll have an IC post up in a bit.

Post is up. RPG Playroom tried to eat it but luckily I had saved it first. Copy and paste, people!

As a personal aside, I grew up on Council Island. My childhood home is about a hundred yards away from where the Council Island Inn would be.

Things in Seattle are still pretty surreal. How is everyone else doing?

Bavaria in Germany here, the madness of the toilet paper bulk buyers is starting to spread here as well (Maybe that’s a separate illness…), home office is issued and all public events are canceled and schools are closed. No curfew yet, but it’s probably only a matter of time…

Looks almost like we are heading into a cyberpunk future here…

In Israel (Beer Sheva), we are in a similar situation plus the goverment uses its secret service to track corona infected, and actively notifies people that they are exposed to the virus. Nothing much to do with the kids, but we have a big yard which makes it easy. I am teaching the students online and taking care of my family in parallel. My wife is a student so we split the days between us so we can both get something done. Not that bad actually, plenty of quality time with our kids – the difficulties are that it feels like there won’t be schools for a long while and that the worse is still before us. Our health system is already a mess without the Corona, not enough equipment and personal getting quarantine/infected.

sorry, the madness and putting together a home office to work out of thoroughly distracted me for the past few days.

My employer told us all on Friday to start working from home. Here (ontario, Canada) the schools are closed, universities too. All large gatherings stopped. Many small restaurants and coffee shops have closed due to fear of their employees getting sick. The government has not yet closed non-essential businesses, but have suggested that will come once things get bad enough. Not that many cases detected here yet, but they expect that is soon to change.

@Tecumseh: sure, I can work with Green toes like that. Thank you for putting the time and thought into it.

I’m going to keep things inching along in the IC thread. My own life is plenty chaotic at the moment.

@beta If you don’t have time for IC posting, then tell us what Jawsey is willing to provide in terms of services and I’ll craft the IC around that. I also treat free spirits as a fairly logical way of completing karma-to-nuyen transfers. I figure that Jawsey will be loathe to sacrifice any karma, given his Awakened needs, but if he does the intel gained will be worth nuyen to the various info brokers of your acquaintance.

@gilga @jack_spade If things progress too slowly, I might skip you two ahead to the meet with Andrew, as AM is his primary contact anyway.

I should be good to keep going now. IC post up.

I’ve never really paid much attention to spirit payments. I’ll try to grab Street Grimoire and see what it has to say, but I don’t off hand recall it talking about ‘standard’ prices?

And while I am loathe to part with any of Jawsey’s karma, money matters too (that is actually the more limiting factor in upgrading his focus.)

I re-read that section in the Grimoire, and it gives no karmic price list 😉 How do you want to handle this?

(and for reference, Jawsey only has two karma available)

ETA: corrected how much karma he has left (2, not 3). And fixed his character sheet that was missing the full spending for run 4 and the interlude (he went down to 0 karma after run 4, then gained 2 in the interlude).

If you agree, we’ll do an IC ritual. I might not have time to write that up today but hopefully I could tomorrow.

There’s one specific secret that Green Toes is sharing. What it’s worth in terms of nuyen will be dependent on what you pay, which is a bit of OOC fiat about its value.

I always found the 2500-to-1 ratio of nuyen-to-karma to be laughable, although leads into a much larger discussion about advancement costs. In this case the information would be worth more than that, nuyen-wise. I’m debating the exact value, the end amount which would be subject to a Negotiation roll. (I’m basically assuming that you sell the info to Lysander or Janet Dime. I just noticed that both Bobby and Jawsey have Lysander, which is a bit redundant but might be helpful if one of you is GMing in the future.)

Since everyone is Awakened, I suppose there’s nothing stopping AM and Bobby from chipping in karma as well if they want (and if they have it available) to inflate the nuyen value further.

ICly, I don’t know how useful you’ll find the information, other than the nuyen value. It could potentially be used during your mission, or it might just be a curiosity. Green Toes would throw the commentary about potential dangers in for free.

I edited the end of my IC to change Jawsey’s agreement to “would you mind if I go talk to my team, some of them might be interested in getting in on this”

Alternatively Jawsey could just agree, then when it comes time for the ritual he could ask to let one or both of the others take part — AM certainly needs nuyen …. (but being awakened karma is also always needed)

Personally I was thinking that @gilga and @jack_spade would give their OOC yay or nay and then we’d move on to the ritual with the interested parties present, rather than tacking the time for an IC “do you want in on this” step. Which is also fine, but just takes another round of IC posts.

I’m open to opinions on the value of karma. I know we’ve been earning 20-25 karma per run, and that a relatively small outlay of karma could wipe out everyone’s debt. But I also know that we’ve had this debt storyline for five chapters now and that we’re getting close to the end of that narrative arc. Mato has completed his, so in terms of pacing it seems fine to keep everyone within reach of the finish line.

I’m also trying to avoid self-dealing in the sense of not making karma too valuable since Mato – whose karma needs are lower than everyone else’s and whose nuyen needs for advancement are quite great – would stand to benefit the most if Green Toes is going to be an ongoing resource.

There could also be an element of randomness to it. For example, we could roll 10d6 and multiply the result by 100 and that’s the (base) nuyen value of a point of karma. That would average ¥3,500, but +/- ¥700 would be an easy swing. In this case it would be in exchange for information that could then benefit from a Negotiation roll, further changing the value. I think variability like that can be fun, but I’m definitely open to other thoughts on the matter.

I’d help you out, but Bobby has spend all his karma for now
